Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery, also known as a blepharoplasty, is a procedure designed to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both.

Is Eyelid Surgery Right For Me?

Eyelid surgery is routinely performed on both men and women to help achieve a brighter and more youthful appearance. As we age, the skin above and below our eyes can start to sag, creating a tired look. Eyelid surgery helps remove this excess skin to restore the natural contours of the eye. Bags below the eye and fine lines and wrinkles around the eye can also be treated with eyelid surgery. Sagging eyelids can sometimes impair one's field of vision as well. If you feel that the skin around your eyes is impairing your vision you may talk to your surgeon about insurance coverage, as sometimes insurance will cover part of this procedure to improve vision.

Your Eyelid Surgery

Before Surgery: Our Chattanooga board certified plastic surgeons will see you in a free initial consultation. The consultation offers you an opportunity to meet with the surgeon of your choice to ask questions. Your surgeon will also review your health history and aesthetic goals to determine if eyelid surgery, or a combination of facial rejuvenation procedures, is right for you. Computerized imaging is available for all of our facial cosmetic procedures.

Day of Surgery: Your eyelid surgery will be performed in our fully accredited in-office surgical suite or in a same day surgical facility as an outpatient procedure. Normally, IV sedation with local anesthesia will be used for your procedure.  Eyelid surgery typically takes approximately 1-2 hours, and will vary depending on whether you are having upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both.

Recovery: You can expect to be in recovery for 1-2 hours before being discharged. For the first week following your eyelid surgery it is recommended that you rest and keep your head elevated to minimize swelling. Stitches are typically removed 5 days after surgery and patients usually return to work one week after surgery.
