What is Awake Liposuction?
Awake Liposuction is the newest advancement in body contouring procedures. It is a surgical procedure performed under local anesthetic allowing the patient to be conscious and aware while the procedure is being performed. Local anesthesia is injected into areas that will be sculpted. This allows the patient to be awake, observe, repostition and stand up as the procedure is being performed. The physician can perform an immediate assessment and further contour the area.
How is it different from traditional Liposuction?
Compared to the traditional method, there are several differences of Awake Liposuction. First, the procedure allows the patient to be awake. Second, this advanced method is less invasive and uses a smaller cannula. This results in less bruising and minimal discomfort. Third, because the patient is able to reposition and stand, this method is more precise allowing the surgeon to fine-tune contouring during the procedure.
Who is a candidate for Awake Liposuction?
To determine if a patient is a candidate for the Awake Liposuction procedure, a patient must be seen in consultation and the procedure be recommended by the physician. Addtionally, a candidate is someone who is generally in good health with realisitc expectations. Please be aware that Awake Liposuction is not a means to treat obesity.
What is the process of the procedure?
On the day of the procedure, the physician will use a marker to outline the areas to be treated. Local anesthesia is injected into the marked areas. The anesthesia takes approximately 20 minutes to take effect. Small incisions are made in designated areas and a small tube is inserted and fat deposits are removed. The physician may ask the patient to reposition or stand during the procedure to identify any additional areas that may need to be treated.
Is the recovery time different from traditional Liposuction with Awake Liposuction?
You will experience swelling and bruising that may last from days to weeks. You can expect some drainage from the incision sites on the day of the surgery. The physician will suggest wearing compression garments over treated areas for six weeks. Strenuous exercise and activity should be avoided for two (2) to four (4) weeks following the procedure. Some cases return to work and resume regular daily activities the next day and others may require up to a week off. You will notice results immediately after surgery.
