Winter Skin Woes

December 5, 2017

And Ways to Refresh Yourself for the Holidays!

Winter is practically here, even though the weather has been nearly 70 and sunny. I get excited this time of year because I get to change out my wardrobe and for a few more sweaters, scarves and of course the boots! Although it can be more of a hassle than it seems to be worth, I even change out my home décor for a more festive theme.  Another exciting part of the colder months, for me anyway, is that I also get to change my skin care routine and use products that I wouldn’t normally use during warmer months. You may notice when it gets cold outside, that your skin becomes dryer and dull.  This is why it is SO important to adjust your skin care to the weather.

You should begin your skin care routine with cleansing.  I always recommend a cosmeceutical cleanser (not the bar of soap in your shower) specifically geared towards your skin type! SkinCeuticals has recently reformulated some of their cleansers, and they have also launched 2 new ones that I love! Even better, is that 4 out of 6 of their cleansers effectively remove long wear makeup such as Dermablend! Those cleansers are the Replenishing, Soothing, Gentle and Simply Clean. One of my go-to cleansers for individuals who tend to have dryer skin is the SkinCeuticals Replenishing Cleanser.  You will absolutely love this cream-to-foam cleanser!

Exfoliation is another key component that should be incorporated in your skin care routine once a week to remove dry skin. You can use a micro-scrub cleanser, such as the SkinCeuticals Micro-Exfoliating Scrub, that will gently exfoliate. After cleansing with this, if you will pat your face dry you will be ready to use my favorite secret weapon, Theraderm Nupeel! You apply a dime sized amount to fingertips and apply a thin layer to your face.  Once applied, wait 60 seconds and then start rubbing your face with your fingertips in a circular motion. You will feel the exfoliated skin cells start to bead up and that is how you will know it’s working. Rinse your face with cool water and be amazed at how easy it was to get brighter, smoother skin!

Sometimes you may also need to change your moisturizer in the colder months.  Due to having oily skin that is prone to breakouts, I personally don’t always use a moisturizer.  However, in the colder months, even the oils in my skin dry up and I find myself needing a moisturizer. Currently, I am using the SkinCeuticals Renew Overnight-Oily, and if I feel that I need a little extra moisture I will use Triple Lipid Restore.

I like to treat myself to a weekly at-home face mask.  I love trying different ones! One of my new favorites is made by a company called Revision. This mask comes in a small jar and is called the Black Mask. It is a purifying deep cleansing mask that rids skin of impurities, excess sebum and other toxins.  This is not the terrifying black mask you’ve seen on Facebook that peels your face off… It’s a cream based mask that wipes off.  Another one of my favorites is the SkinCeuticals PhytoCorrective Masque (I call it the “Green Goo” mask).  It is great for chapped or irritated skin because it is a botanical soothing mask.

I hope that these skin care tips help keep your skin from showing signs of the cold weather.  If you need a personal consultation to determine what products would work best for your skin type, please come see me in a free skin care consultation.

Happy Holidays!
