Spring Cleaning

It's that time of year again: spring cleaning!

April 17, 2017

Open your windows, let the sunshine in, turn on your house cleaning jams, and dive into the mess that you’ve created in the cold winter months. You deep clean every inch of your house, the garage, and even the yard, but what about your makeup bag or skin care cabinet? Yeah, you probably forgot about those places.  During your spring clean, don’t forget to go through old cosmetics and skin care, and toss anything that is past its expiration date. Many of my patients don’t know about the little “expiration date” that is on almost all cosmetic and skin care products. If you take a close look at the bottom or back side of the product you will likely find what looks like a round container with an open lid and “6m” or “12m.” Most products have a decently long shelf life, but that all changes once the product is opened. This “6m” means the product should be thrown out 6 months after opening. The “12m” would mean 12 months after opening. Now, you’re asking, “What’s the big deal?”  Over time products begin to break down and can become ineffective or even harmful to our skin.

So what do you do? At least once a year gather all of your cosmetics and skincare products in one place. I know we are all guilty of running out to buy the “latest and greatest” products only to use it for a few weeks before leaving it in a drawer to collect dust when we eye something “better.” Take a good look at everything you have and throw out anything that is obviously old, dried up, or changing color. Then take a close look at the packaging and check the expiration dates.  If you’re not sure how long it’s been since you’ve opened something, toss the product out; don’t chance damaging your skin. Regardless of how much you paid or how pretty the jar is, don’t risk damaging your skin.

Now, since you’ve probably thrown out most of your cosmetics and skin care, you need more to replace it.  Instead of playing a guessing game at the drug store to find something that works for your individual needs, please come see me.  I can recommend a skin care regimen tailored specifically for you, and maybe even suggest some new cosmetics.  If you mention this blog post when you visit me in a free skin care consultation, get 10% off Elta MD Aero, Sport, Daily, or Clear moisturizing sunscreen until May 26th.
