he FDA has recently given its stamp of approval to a much awaited product for use in the United States.  Restylane has been available since 1996 in other countries, and has successfully treated more than a million people around the world. With the FDA's nod, Restylane is poised to assume a position of dominance among injectable cosmetic agents.

Restylane is a crystal clear non-animal biodegradable gel. Its chemical composition is based on hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring body substance. This gel can be injected into a wide variety of areas to improve facial contours and smooth wrinkles. This internationally recognized product produces natural, gentle, safe, and long-lasting corrections.

Restylane's principal uses in Europe have been in smoothing wrinkles, sculpting lips and even shaping the bony contours of the face. It works by creating volume in the selected areas.

It is widely employed to treat worry lines in the forehead, smile lines, crow's feet, and "bunny lines" at the root of the nose. With wrinkle injection, a topical anesthetic is applied to the skin shortly prior to injection. The injections are then undertaken using very small volumes of the product. Results are immediate.

Lip augmentation or correction of volume loss can be carried out in two ways to improve the lip line and pout.  Typically, a local anesthetic is used before treatment to numb the lips and surrounding skin. Restylane can be injected into the inside of the upper and lower lip to improve fullness. This can be combined with an injection along the lip edge to mark its contour. Defining the lip border creates a youthful look and prevents lipstick from bleeding into the small wrinkles around the mouth. The lines that extend to the nose from the lip (the philtral ridge) can also be enhanced and defined with injection.  Combinations of techniques can be used to correct specific problems.

Immediately after treatment, slight swelling and tenderness may occur. This is normal. The discomfort is temporary and generally is gone in a few days after injection. With lip treatment, the lips may become swollen and look a bit uneven, but this too typically persists for only a few days.

Restylane is the predictably longest lasting of injectable enhancement product available today. Its studies indicate that repeat injection is not usually needed for seven months to retain the effect. This outperforms unpredictable fat injections and collagen injections of all types. It can be used in combination with other products such as BOTOX, which act upon the wrinkling process in a different way. It does not necessarily replace surgery, but can forestall it, and efface wrinkles which are not realistically approachable by tried and true surgical techniques. With all this advantage, Restylane injections have also proven to be quite economical and surprisingly affordable.
