All brides dream of looking radiant on their wedding day. Preparations for the event can certainly take their toll for months before the actual ceremony. It's not unusual for many brides to seek the council of their plastic surgeon to be sure that they look as "put together" as their wedding. The first thing we typically discuss is skin care. All young ladies want to have flawless skin. Unfortunately, some have to work at it a bit harder than others. There are a wide variety of products available to plastic surgeons which are not available over the counter. Advanced skin care includes daily applications of skin stimulating and exfoliating products such as Neova and Theraderm which refresh the skin with fruit acids and moisturizers. In office peels can hasten the progress of your treatment, by correcting pigmentation problems and fine lines. Problem acne can also be addressed with these product lines. Stubborn lines can be addressed with BOTOX and COSMOPLAST injections. Botox rids us of wrinkling around the eyes and forehead by weakening the muscles which produce the unwanted creases. Cosmoplast is a new line of injectable human collagen which does not require a skin test and produces no inflammatory reaction like other injectables. Injections can be made to fill in an unwanted line, but more frequently, requests are made for fuller lips. To increase lip size the material is injected along the lip line with local anesthetic. Lipstick can be worn in a day. We would recommend these interventions about two weeks before the wedding. Some brides have more significant changes in mind. The most popular body contouring procedures continue to be breast augmentation and liposuction. Both procedures are done on an outpatient basis without the need of general anesthesia. Candidates for implant augmentation alone, typically have small breasts without evidence of sagging. The procedure is performed through small incisions usually beneath the breasts. The implant is placed beneath the pectoralis muscle which leads to the most natural appearance. The patient leaves the operating room in a bra with a light dressing and paper tape, this being all that is necessary for the incision. Augmentation sizes can vary widely, but most young women seem to desire a large "C". This compliments wedding dresses as well as tropical honeymoon attire. Liposuction is directed to trouble areas at the hips or lower abdomen. Through 5mm incisions, fat can be removed, improving body contours and the fit of clothing. After surgery, a compressive garment is typically required for about a month as the swelling resolves and the result achieves permanence. Once a particular deformity is corrected, it is unlikely to return if weight is maintained. Of course, there are risks to any surgical intervention, but thousands of breast augmentations and liposuctions are performed safely by qualified plastic surgeons every year. So, as your wedding approaches, take the opportunity to visit your plastic surgeon, and spoil yourself with a gift to insure that you will look your absolute best for your big day.
