The safety and reproducibility of aesthetic surgical procedures have led more people than ever to consider enhancing their appearance. Consultation with a plastic surgeon can explore the options that one may have with respect to their particular cosmetic issue. Patients often review preoperative and postoperative photography of patients who have undergone the procedure which they are contemplating. Also, a wide variety of informational videos have been produced to help potential aesthetic surgery patients understand the extent of procedure they are considering. All this, in an attempt to aid in the understanding of what may be reasonably expected as a result of their surgery. However, one of the best tools available to plastic surgeons in their quest to demonstrate to patients the result they can expect is “imaging”. Imaging systems utilize a computer to digitalize and store a patients image in such a manner that a computer program can be used to alter the image. I find that this system is most useful with facial rejuvenation surgery, but it can be used for all body surfaces. Typically, in an imaging session, the patient's picture is recorded, and then slowly manipulated using a morphing program until the surgeon feels that the computer generated result is consistent with what one may reasonably expect from the planned surgery. I have found that, in appropriate hands, the computer imaging system can provide a result which is ultimately quite close to reality. It permits patients to step back and review their appearance much more clinically, and affords them the ability to see what their surgeon sees. Discussion regarding the alteration accomplished by the computer is carried out while the imaging session continues. This permits patients a clearer understanding about what can and cannot be accomplished by any particular procedure. Ultimately, patients leave their sessions with a more concrete notion of what their aesthetic issues are, and what current technology can provide as a solution. Using the imaging system as an educational tool, and combining this with a candid and informative consultation, is the surest means to a well-informed patient.
