s Christmas approaches, we often find ourselves looking for "just the right gift" for our loved ones. The experience can be dizzying.  I might suggest that a gift of something less tangible and more personal may be best. 

There is nothing more personal than one’s appearance.  Most of us have some flaw in our appearance which has been of concern to us.  To some, even minor imperfections can significantly impact self perception and esteem.  Aesthetic plastic surgeons deal with these issues every day, and have safe predictable solutions to a wide variety of cosmetic issues.

For example, nothing changes one’s appearance, in my opinion, more than an improvement in nasal contours.  For young people particularly, a misshapen or injured nose can be a significant source of angst.  A cosmetic rhinoplasty can safely alter the cartilages and bones of the nose so they conform to the shape of the face.  This outpatient procedure can truly be transforming in terms of aesthetic improvement as well as bolstering self-confidence.

We often see patients who have had concerns about the shape of their ears for years.  They have worn long hair to obscure protruding ears which have been embarrassing to them.  An otoplasty is a surgical procedure that permanently alters the shape of the ear.  This surgery can even be performed under local anesthesia, and has a relatively brief postoperative period of convalescence.

Perhaps it’s the visible signs of aging which are troubling.  A great deal of improvement can be afforded quickly with two of my favorite injectable agents. These are RESTYLANE and BOTOX.  The combination of these two interventions can produce significant improvements, even in this short period before the holidays.  BOTOX and RESTYLANE  injections require no down time, and are frequently used to augment the lips and control creases around the mouth, as well as providing a mini brow lift and wrinkle control in the upper one third of the face.  Other minimal down time procedures include the upper and lower eyelift.  Upper eyelift in particular requires about a three day recovery.  Eyelid surgery has the "biggest bang for the physiologic buck" in terms of aesthetic changes.  Candidates for eyelid surgery often complain of a chronically tired or unhappy look.  Excessive upper eyelid skin can even begin to obscure vision. This appearance is altered by the surgery, leading to a brighter more alert look without appearing operated.
