As we age, the brow begins to descend. In addition, overactive muscles in the forehead and brow contribute to the development of creases or lines across the forehead and between the brows. In some patients, heredity determines how the brow will age. All of these factors contribute to a low, sagging brow that produces a tired, heavy, angry or sad appearance.
A brow lift or forehead lift can help minimize the creases, frown lines and drooping forehead and create a more animated, youthful and alert look. One of the most popular cosmetic surgery choices, a brow lift can be performed alone or in combination with other facial procedures. A brow lift can:
- Minimize creases, lines and other sign of aging in the forehead and brow areas;
- Improve the frown lines or vertical creases that develop between the eyebrows;
- Reposition a low brow that is effecting the upper eyelid area;
- Raise the eyebrows to a more youthful, alert position.
Your Brow Lift Surgery
A brow lift, like any aesthetic surgery, is reserved for healthy people. The usual brow position for women is above the bony ridge which is above the eyelid. For men, the brow should be at about the level of the ridge.
Brow lifts are performed with a local anesthesia and conscious sedation as an outpatient through an incision at or behind the hairline allowing the surgeon to adjust the tissue and muscle. The choice of incision depends upon the patient and the problem.
After surgery, the patient is wrapped in a turban-like dressing. Frequently a small drainage tube is maintained for several days. Swelling along the brow is minimized with elevation and ice packs. One can expect some bruising, that will dissipate in about a week.
The results from a brow lift are long lasting. It is rare for a patient to need a repeat procedure, even years after the initial surgery.
Additional procedures that you may wish to combine with a brow lift include:
- Facelift – a facelift eliminates mid and lower face wrinkles;
- Blepharoplasty – a blepharoplasty can enhance your eyes and eliminate the “bags” both above and below them.
