As we age, the delicate skin and musculature around the eye can develop significant laxity. This can lead to excess skin resting on the eyelashes and lower eyelid bagginess. These problems are exaggerated by chronic sun exposure and sinusitis. The redundant skin in the upper lids can become so excessive that it actually affects one’s vision by reducing their field of vision.
Blepharoplasty, commonly called eyelid surgery, is a procedure designed to improve the appearance of the upper and lower lids but can also improve vision by lifting the excess skin that results in a greater field of vision.
Your Eyelid Surgery
When you set up your eyelid surgery consultation with one of our experienced Chattanooga plastic surgeons, it is important that you report any serious medical or eye conditions that you have. Blepharoplasty, like all aesthetic surgery, is reserved for those in good health. After a review of your general and specifically eye-health history, your cosmetic surgeon will discuss your principle areas of dissatisfaction.
A typical blepharoplasty procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Some swelling and bruising or pinkness may be evident as the healing process advances. All surgical interventions have risks, but many blepharoplasties are performed annually with very satisfying results.
Upper eyelid procedure
An upper lid procedure involves an incision which is made into the eyelid and carried shortly into the crow’s foot area. Through this incision, the structures of concern are modified. The incision is then finely closed.
Lower eyelid procedure
A lower lid procedure requires that an incision be made below the lash line extending into the crow’s foot area. This is particularly helpful in patients with baggy lower lids and permits a redraping of the muscle that supports the lower eyelid. The incision is then finely closed.
Procedures you may wish to combine with blepharoplasty include:
- Facelift- combining a facelift with blepharoplasty can enhance your eyes and eliminate mid and lower face wrinkles.
- Botox® Cosmetic - frown lines and upper brow wrinkles can be eliminated with Botox, while the wrinkles on your lower face can be corrected with a facelift.
- Brow Lift – if your brow line has become droopy and wrinkled giving you a tired or angry look, a brow lift can help you enhance your upper face, while a facelift can correct the lower face.
