Weight loss efforts usually reach a fever pitch after the holidays when we all begin to recognize that over indulging can take its toll. However, weight loss has become a national obsession with advertising campaigns tauting claims for all manner of weight reduction techniques.
Plastic surgeons are frequently consulted for spot reduction using liposuction as our primary tool. But all patients should know that liposuction is not a panacea for obesity. But rather than liposuction alone, many are turning to body contouring methods to solve their problems. Body contouring is nowhere better demonstrated than in the post gastric by-pass patient group.
Gastric by-pass is a surgical intervention for the morbidly obese. In this procedure, the stomach is surgically decreased in size to limit caloric intake. After significant weight loss ensues however, the patient can be left with areas of substantial skin and soft tissue excess. These areas are typically the abdomen, breasts, arms, and legs. Gastric by-pass patients may find that it is difficult or impossible to improve these areas without body contouring surgery.
A surgical body contouring consultation should review the patient's state of health, weight loss goals, and surgical expectations. The by-pass surgeon should be included in these discussions to best judge appropriate surgical timing.
Most body contouring can be performed as an outpatient. One of the most popular procedures is abdominoplasty or extended abdominoplasty. In this procedure, the excess skin and fat of the abdomen is removed allowing for tightening of the underlying musculature. Most typically, the incision is at the groin line, but occasionally an additional horizontal incision is needed to maximize contour correction. Correction of sagging or ptotic breasts is also frequently performed. In most gastric by-pass patients, the procedure is employed to decrease breast size while simultaneously tightening and lifting the breast gland. Surgery is not limited to the trunk, and some patients are unhappy with excess and loose skin in the upper arms and thighs. To improve the arm problem, an arm lift or brachioplasty is performed. Here, an incision is made on the inside of the arm and extended into the axilla. This allows the plastic surgeon to remove the duplicated skin and fat while correcting the "bat wing" deformity significant weight loss can precipitate. Thigh lift has multiple variations, but is the principle means by which upper leg wrinkling and buttocks sagging can be improved either after weight loss or overly aggressive liposuction. So, if you've maximized your workouts, lost that weight, but still are unhappy with your appearance, then a body contouring procedure may be appropriate for you.
