For more information about abdominoplasty, we recommend the following articles written by our surgeons:
Many patients desire a flat, well-toned abdomen that they have been unable to achieve with diet and exercise. Unfortunately, heredity, pregnancy, prior surgical procedures, and weight fluctuations contribute to excess skin and/or fat and weak muscle tone
Abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as tummy tuck, is a procedure used to remove excess skin and fat of the abdomen and tighten the abdominal wall.
Am I a candidate for abdominoplasty?
To determine if you are an appropriate candidate for an abdominoplasty procedure, please visit our Chattanooga cosmetic surgeons for an initial consultation.
When you visit one of our plastic surgeons, he will discuss your medical history and lifestyle with you in order to determine whether a tummy tuck is the right procedure for you. Our Chattanooga cosmetic surgeons will emphasize that abdominoplasty is not a weight loss procedure but one that is best performed on patients at or near their ideal weight.
Your doctor may consider:
- Your physical health – it is important that you be healthy and not have medical conditions that could adversely affect a good outcome.
- Your plans for future weight loss or pregnancy – if you intend to get pregnant in the future or plan to lose weight, it is best to hold off on abdominoplasty until these goals are accomplished.
- Your use of tobacco- it is important that you not smoke in the time period surrounding your procedure. Tobacco use substantially increased the risks of infection as well as poor healing.
- Your goals for the procedure- abdominoplasty is an excellent procedure, but it is important to have realistic expectations about the results.
Your Abdominoplasty Procedure
Abdominoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure. Your procedure will be performed in our accredited office-based surgical facility or an ambulatory surgery center under local intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. At your consultation the physician will discuss the anesthesia options.
The complete tummy tuck procedure is the most comprehensive type of abdominoplasty and is beneficial for a patient who wants to tighten a protruding or sagging abdomen.
Your cosmetic surgeon will make a horizontal incision just above the pubic hairline typically from hip to hip. Another incision around the belly button may be necessary if there is excess skin in the upper abdomen. Excess fat, tissue and skin are removed, and weakened abdominal muscles are repaired through this incision.
Mini tummy tuck
A mini tummy tuck is a procedure performed to eliminate excess fat on the lower abdomen when the amount of excess skin to be removed is limited to below the navel. The incision is often shorter than a full tummy tuck incision. Your plastic surgeon will determine if you are a candidate for this procedure at the time of your consultation.
Both types of abdominoplasty will leave a permanent scar along the incision site. Sometimes liposuction is used to further contour the abdomen.
